Chevrolet Awarded $165,000 in Scholarships to 2022 HBCU Marketing and Journalism Interns

Chevrolet Awards $165,000 in Scholarship Funds During 10-Week Event

Chevrolet is one of the premier names in the American automotive industry. One of their socially-conscious initiatives involves collaboration with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Chevrolet calls this initiative "Discover the Unexpected."

"Discover the Unexpected" is in its sixth year of existence. As part of the program, 11 HBCU students took part in a 10-week internship and scholarship program. There were two major points of focus for the internships. Five of the students were interns with a focus on marketing, and the remaining six were learning about journalism. The marketing interns explored roles in GM's desired, all-electric future.

More than just a 10-week learning experience, the "Discover the Unexpected" event also provided $165,000 in scholarships to the HBCU participants. Steve Majoros, vice president of Chevy's marketing department, expressed his honor and gratitude for the continued partnership with the NNPA. He further elaborated that the participants made a real impact on the marketing department. They completed exercises in working with large companies, managing their time, and dealing with virtual work environments.

One of the benefits of the internship is that the marketing interns learned how to be ambassadors for electric vehicles. They will be able to convey the benefits of electric-vehicle technology within their communities. The journalism interns worked on various skills as well. They learned about traditional mediums such as broadcast, print, and online journalism. They also worked on photojournalism skills. These students were even treated to a view of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, an all-electric, sport-utility vehicle.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., the CEO, and president of the NNPA, also expressed his appreciation for their partnership with Chevrolet in this endeavor. He states that the journalism interns got to work with some legendary publishers. There was a push to bridge the gap between traditional and more modern journalism. Both Chevrolet and the NNPA are hopeful that these future journalists will one day be able to effectively cover the automotive industry. There's a lot to be excited about with the potential all-electric future of vehicles.
