Chevrolet Engine Not Working

Why Is My Car Not Starting?

You may be in for an unpleasant surprise one day when you go to start the car, only to discover that it won't run. Your car may stop running for several different reasons. The problem may be simple, such as a gas tank that's out of fuel, or you may have a more severe issue on hand that involves the engine and mechanical system. If you can't figure out and solve the problem yourself, you'll want to take the car to a mechanic for evaluation and repairs.

Bad Starter

The engine on your car has a small part called the motor starter. The motor starter is an electric motor that signals the engine to operate. If the engine fails to turn over, a problem with the starter might be the underlying cause. If you notice that the headlights and battery work fine but the car still won't start, the starter might be the problem. The starter can also make clicking sounds if it goes bad.

Dead Battery

As with other parts of the car, your car's battery has a limited lifespan. The battery should last for about 60,000 miles or about three to five years. However, the battery's lifespan can be reduced by certain factors, including frequent exposure to driving in hot or cold temperatures. If you live in a place with hot summers or cold winters, it's a good idea to have the battery checked regularly to make sure it is not fading. In addition to simply wearing out, the car's battery can develop rust and corrosion that reduce performance and can make your vehicle fail to start.

Faulty Ignition

The ignition switch on your car usually signals the engine to kick into gear when you start the vehicle. However, the ignition can break and fail to send that signal to the engine. If that happens, you will need to take your car to a mechanic to replace the ignition switch. If the battery works okay and the headlights are not dim, a problem with the ignition may be why your car is not starting.

No Gas

An empty gas tank means that your car will not be going anywhere in the near future. If you drain the gas tank, you'll need to get a refill through roadside assistance or by getting in touch with a mechanic.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter in the car's engine needs to be cleaned periodically to keep clean air flowing into the engine. If the fuel filter gets too dirty, the engine won't get the oxygen and air it needs to function.
