In an impressive fusion of motorsports innovation and public safety measures, technology originally created by Pratt Miller Motorsports, the team behind Corvette Racing, is now being repurposed to protect first responders. At CES 2025, industrial vehicle manufacturer Oshkosh showcased how they're applying racing-derived technology to help prevent accidents involving emergency vehicles. This transfer of Corvette Racing's advanced monitoring technology to public roads has the potential to save lives.
Safety at the Forefront
First responders are counted on to save lives during emergencies, yet they often become accident victims themselves. Between 2019 and 2023, 251 first responders lost their lives in vehicle-related incidents. Oshkosh developed the Collision Avoidance Mitigation System (CAMS) to address this, adapting cutting-edge safety technology from Pratt Miller Motorsports' Corvette Racing efforts.
Advanced Safety Systems for the Road
Inspired by motorsports, the safety system's technology utilizes rear-facing cameras and radar to monitor the speed and movement of approaching vehicles. In its original racing application, this technology provides drivers with essential data like vehicle speed, trajectory, projected path, track positioning, and other key metrics. This same advanced technology is being modified to protect emergency responders working at accident scenes.
Protecting First Responders with CAMS
The CAMS system utilizes one or two camera and radar units installed on emergency vehicles, which operate independently from the vehicle's built-in sensors. Powered by artificial intelligence, it processes incoming data to detect threats and then delivers warnings through different methods such as lights, horns, sounds, and haptic alerts via wearable devices—ideal for noisy environments. Scheduled for deployment in 2026, this system is scalable across various vehicle types, from fire trucks to snowplows and tow trucks.
