What's New for the 2018 Chevrolet Sonic?

The Chevrolet Sonic sees some small changes in 2018, such as new color choices and a reorganization of the features in some of the packages. The LT trim also gains a sport suspension system.

2018 Sonic Trims & Technology

The Sonic LS has as standard equipment 15-in wheels, remote keyless entry, a rear view camera, air conditioning, the MyLink infotainment system with 7-in touchscreen interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, tilt and telescoping steering wheel and wireless connectivity.

The Sonic LT adds to the LS with the features like an upgraded audio system with 6 speakers and SiriusXM radio, 15-in aluminum wheels, power windows, power and heated side mirrors and cruise control. The manual version of the Sonic LT also has a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, while the hatchback LT has a 1.8-liter engine.

The Sonic Premier has the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, heated front seats, power driver's seat, keyless entry and ignition and leatherette upholstery on the seats. It also has aluminum wheels and a rear spoiler to complete the sports car look.

Options that can be added to these trim packages include the RS package to add more sporty features, the LT Convenience package that adds many of the Premier features like power driver's seat and heated front seats to the LT trim. There's also a Driver Confidence package that adds rear park assist, forward collision alert and a lane-departure warning system.

Sporty, Yet Efficient

The Chevrolet Sonic comes with a pair of engine options available depending on the model. The base engine that comes with the Sonic LS is a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine that packs 138 horsepower and 125 foot-pounds of power with a 6-speed transmission. This engine is enough to make the Sonic feel zippy when accelerating onto the freeway. The LT and Premier trims, though, have a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with 138 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of power. This engine makes the Chevrolet Sonic drive like a sports car, being able to reach 60 mph in eight seconds. Because the Sonic is a small car, this sporty driving experience is possible while still getting 32 mpg fuel economy.

Safety in the 2018 Chevrolet Sonic

2018 Chevrolet Sonic RearThe Sonic was awarded five stars in its overall performance in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash testing, receiving five stars in the frontal and side impact tests and four stars in rollover test. The Chevrolet Sonic is equipped with several safety features as standard equipment, such as 10 airbags, electronic stability control, crash-collapsing pedals and anti-lock brakes. Optional safety features include rear-park assist, lane-departure warning system and forward-collision alerts. All this adds up to a vehicle with great overall safety, especially with the optional technology enhancements added.
