Mid-size sedans offer the most familiar qualities of a sedan, separate quarters for passengers and baggage while striking the right balance between size and fuel economy. A perfect example of this is the 2020 Chevy Malibu. Given the positive feedback for its predecessor, only minor changes were made for this coming version. Just looking at what it possesses will make it obvious why there's no need to mess with perfection.
Chevrolet starts the Malibu lineup with an L edition loaded with conveniences and only goes up from there with the LS, RS, LT, and Premium trims. This basic Malibu version includes 6-speaker sound, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a USB port, air conditioning, a 12-volt outlet, 6-way manually adjusted front seats, and power locks and windows. Next up, the LS throws in WiFi hotspot capability. With the RS model, commuters experience an 8-position motorized driver's seat, a leather-clad steering wheel, and a rear spoiler. The LT edition advances things with a twin-zone climate system, heated front seats, and trial SiriusXM radio. Ultimate opulence comes with the Premier edition equipped with a Bose 9-speaker sound system, a 120-volt outlet, leather upholstery, and a wireless charger.
The 2020 Chevy Malibu is all about turbocharging the way forward. The standard powerplant under the hood of most Malibu trims is a 1.5-liter turbocharger-4 creates 160 horsepower. It also uses features like direct injection and variable valve timing in leagues with a continuously variable transmission, to achieve 29 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. Bigger muscles come by way of a 2-liter turbo-4 packed into the Malibu Premier edition that reaches 250 horsepower. This block is lashed to a 9-speed automatic transmission for 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.
The 2020 Malibu's first line of defense for occupants includes traction and stability control, a backup camera, antilock brakes, and airbags. Safety moves into the future with optional capabilities for the LT and Premier editions like frontal pedestrian and collision detection with driver warning and emergency braking at speeds up to 50 mph. These higher trims also allow for selections like road and lane exiting warning with self-correction ability, blind zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert.
